My last post was about a comment on my latest story that sounded sarcastic, or at least insincere, and I postulated that it was written by AI.

Well, I was on the AO3 sub last night and people were talking about a new trend where someone leaves a comment on your fic and then when you engage with them by replying with a thank-you, they follow up with "I really want to do some art of your fic. Contact me on Discord so we can hash out the details." In other words, a new type of art spammer. People are especially outraged by this new thing, because they get the excitement of receiving positive feedback and then find out it was a lie, and that the commenter is just trying to manipulate them.

No idea if this is what this was, as I'm not going to reply to them, but I wouldn't be surprised, especially since they left the "omg this is wonderful" comment but weren't impressed enough to leave a kudo.

Challenge #15: How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

You know, all things considered, I think it went pretty darn well! January has been a really tough month on a lot of fronts, personal and political - protests, vigils, the cold, protests and vigils in the cold and all the emotions that go with them, and a pair of sick cats on top of it all (they're fine, but after five years of kitty health crises it's prodding me right in the anxiety). But Snowflake has been a bright spot of fun things to do and talk about, and I've had a great time. Last year I didn't manage to do many of the challenges; this year I got all 15! I stretched myself a little bit with moodboards (I'm still proud of that one) and other times happily reinterpreted prompts to avoid stretching myself too much :D And while I didn't leave as many comments as I wanted to, I did get to have some nice conversations, and I'm looking forward to the friending meme tomorrow.

Thanks for a lovely 15 challenges, mods!

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

It went well. I had to stretch my moodboard muscles. I reached out to (new to me) snowflakers and some of them reached back. Very CooL.

I'm glad I took part, and I'm looking forward to next year.

I hit Price Chopper while I was downtown. Yes, again. My meal plans got rearranged due to Pip’s toothache. I already had the pork chops in the oven when he got home yesterday, so there was no changing that, but I decided to do French toast (which he had requested one day) because it should be easy for him to eat. I was not prepared with enough bread in the house, or bacon. o_O

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip/the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I also wrote out checks for the property tax (personal and LLC).

I read more fanfic and watched Wild Cards and an ep of House Hunters International. Zoo Tampa was my background tv.

I had more stomach issues today. cutting for the gross details )

Temps started out at 7.2(F) (and actually went up a bit to 7.5 before I left the house) and reached 23.2. The lows for the next three nights (including tonight) are supposed to be below zero. *shivers* DNW!! There was sun again today, which was nice.

Speaking of DNW, it appears that the N’oreaster this weekend might miss us this far inland? I hope that continues to be the case. Looks like Boston is going to get hit hard again. (As well as North Carolina, so stay safe down there!)

Mom Update:

Mom was doing okay when I visited. She had some protein drink just before I got there and I made her an egg with cheese for lunch. (One egg with cheese filled her to almost uncomfortable. I can’t believe just how small her stomach is. I know they took about 1/3 of it, and that by not eating it’s probably shrunk even farther, and yet I’m still surprised by it.) I also took her some of the steamed butternut squash chunks so she could do with it as she wished. (I’m sure I would have put too much butter and or brown sugar on it for her taste.)

While I was there she got a phone call from my brother’s long-term GF’s (they’ve been together since high school, so a couple years longer than Pip and I have been together) mother. This woman was a year ahead of my mom in high school and they were never friends, and even just acquaintances after R & T got together, but she recently asked if it would be okay if she called. It sounded like they had a good conversation.

My mom mentioned that my brother calls her every night, which is nice. She also told me she was expecting my aunt and uncle tomorrow morning.

I wrote out a check for her and put it back in the mail.

Sister A and Ian had just arrived when I was talking to her in the evening and she told me that her BFF had been there in the afternoon after I left, so she had some nice company today.

A small catch-up with works I've posted to AO3 recently and not mentioned in other posts. There are three seasonal exchanges I take part in each year, so it's been a productive time for me. I also feel much less blocked in terms of writing fic, with Heated Rivalry getting me fannishly excited again, and my other fandoms have been benefiting.

Things I wrote, podficced, or arted in Procreate:

due South seekrit santa:
Roommates (Fraser/Ray Vecchio & Ray Kowalski, Dief)

Stargate Atlantis secret santa:
The Ancient Texts (Gen, Ronon & John)
Bribery (Jack O'Neill Gen, background John/Rodney - a mod treat)

SGA Discord Server annual fic exchange:
A Good Walk, Spoiled (Team, John/Rodney, Action/adventure)
and It Takes a Village (Gen, Radek & Biro)
and in the Leftover Treats category of the exchange:
A New Lease of Life (older John/Rodney, Explicit)
and The Way To a Man's Heart (Ronon/Rodney, Teen)

In podfic, just the one:
Christmas At Dukes Denver by Persiflager for ITPE (Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. Harriet/Peter)

My fanart's still all Heated Rivalry - unsurprising, with such inspiring material!
Ya Tebya Lyublyu (I Love You) for the [community profile] drawesome romance prompt (Shane/Ilya)
Shane's Emotional Support Crotch (2 chapters/works so far, maybe planning more) (Shane/Ilya, NSFW)
Touch Yourself (Shane)

And of course I've enrolled for way too many Big Bangs etc, in HR. One is ICE OUT a tumblr-based HR fanworks auction to raise funds to support those combating ICE. Sign ups as a creator are almost closed, and the bidding starts in a couple of days.

No I have read this but I did watch the movie. Many years ago. Did everyone read the book? What did you think of it?

Challenge #14: In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom.

So, last year, I wrote up my first promo for a beloved ship (and had a fantastic time). This year's prompt is a little bit more geared toward canons, but I ran into some difficulties with that. Have you ever wanted to get into Transformers? Well, I'm told the new movie is actually a great way to get into it, but I didn't see it, so have you considered a cartoon from 2007... So instead, I'm going to give you a quick ship promo and rec list for another beloved ship of mine: Ema Skye/Franziska von Karma from Ace Attorney!

(I don't have a thing for rarepairs that share one character with a much more popular ship at all, haha.)

So, no, Ema and Franziska don't have a lot of screentime together (they do interact briefly in Ace Attorney Investigations). But I first got interested in the ship based on the parallels. They're both intelligent, talented women with complicated relationships to their jobs - Franziska struggling with not being the "perfect" prosecutor, while Ema ends up stuck as a detective instead of forensics like she wanted. Both of them have a close relative, a respected prosecutor, who had a long-term impact on their choice of career and also ends up in jail for serious crimes including evidence forgery; Lana is going to get out of jail someday and Manfred isn't, but it's still a point for them to connect over.

They're a lot of fun to bounce off each other, too. They're both abrasive and blunt, even on a good day; Franziska has no patience for incompetence and Ema is not interested in sugarcoating things to make people feel better, and I don't get the impression any of that would change in a romantic relationship. But Ema says she prefers her prosecutors "simmerous" (as opposed to "glimmerous") - yeah, yeah, I know what canon meant, but as far as I'm concerned that's a great description for Franziska. It's a ship with a lot of potential spice! There's room for comfort and fluff, too, but I do have a weakness for ships that argue. (Also, while there's not much fic for the ship, the fic that is there is extremely hot. One might say...simmering.)

So, if all of that sounds promising and you wanted to get into this ship, where should you start? I have a few suggestions, based on what you're interested in! (Some of which are self-recs, for which I will not apologize. It's a rarepair. :D)

Open to WIPs and interested in long, plotty fic? I've been having a great time following flaws (upon your sleeve) (beneath the ground), described as "A catastrophic doomed-to-fail toxic-yuri we-can-make-each-other-worse romance workbuddies fic." It's extremely fun and you should check it out.

Here for some hurt/comfort and the actual getting-together process? How To Avoid The Holidays, written for AA Holiday Rarepair Week at the end of last year: Franziska and Ema bond over disliking Christmas. (This one's mine!)

Looking for comedy and into chatfic? Try Instructions Unclear, Bi Panicked from the kink meme, featuring Maya and some excellent Ema&Maya BFFs alongside the FranEma.

Hey Riella, you said this ship has extremely hot fic, where's that? Three choices for this one! The Music Our Collisions Make (rough sex, it's-complicated relationship), which I recced earlier in Snowflake but will always happily bring up again, Far Gone (premature ejaculation, light teasing) from the kink meme, or Her Summer Blouse (post-office-party PWP), also from the kink meme.

I feel like it's very hard for me to describe my creative processes.  Maybe it's because I haven't spent much time actually thinking about what makes them happen.  Maybe it's because I'm so used to them that there doesn't seem to be anything worth talking about.  Maybe it's because 99% of my process is extremely internal, just turning the idea over and over like a rotisserie chicken until it's ready.  Which, I mean, isn't not my process, so I guess that's descriptive???

Maybe if I break it down by types.

For fics--specifically fics written for fun that actually have a plot and aren't just elaborate set-ups for jokes:
There's a lot of poking at a plot to see if it's worth being Fic Plot or just Fun Daydream Idea.  Pretty much all my fics start out as Fun Daydream Ideas anyway, but if something keeps coming up and I can see the story being written--I mean this literally; I see the sentences in front of me and will start rewriting/rewording them as I go--then it's time to start writing them down.

For fics that are basically elaborate set-ups for jokes:
A punchline gets me, or a pun, or a meme format makes me think "how could I put this into [fic universe]?" and then that's it.  My like my full fics, I start writing and rewriting the idea over and over in my head.  Sometimes I'll swap in different characters for whatever places they need to be.  For example, I'm being haunted by the "Robert and Barbara Wire" Tumblr post, and I have a different word in mind but using that format, so I've been trying to figure out which of the Batfamily I want to use for each speaker.  So, like all of them, I keep turning it around and trying new characters in different roles until I find what I like.

Fandom related posts, not fics:
Pretty much the same as above.  I don't write a lot of serious meta about my fandoms because that's just not my preferred way to fan, so most of my fandom posts are jokes.  I will say, though, that I tend to work these the same way I work my stand-up comedy bits:  I try it out in my head to play around with it and see if there's a funnier way to do the bit.  If I can't decide what version works best, I start inflicting it upon testing it out with my friends and family.  Usually, I'll start IRL with my mom (as she knows at least of most of my fandoms) or a friend via text.  Then I might move to a Discord friend, test it there.  Once I think it's got the right feel of what I want, then I'll usually share it on Tumblr (which is pretty much my only social media presence nowadays).

And there you have it!  Or some of it, at least.

Snowflake Challenge 15: How did it go?

I had a great deal of fun. I agree with others that posting the daily prompts late, it slowed me down. But I had a wonderful time. I met a lot of new people, learned much about fandoms I'm not used to and enjoyed all of the challenges. I think we should have one in July. Hahaha. It was that fun.

Okay, so this vid is wonderful (courtesy of a rec by [personal profile] dine). It's long, lushly romantic, and Jesus, why is the kissing montage in the middle so goddamn hot?

a thousand years by mybelovedismine

Thinking about why some vids work for me and others don't. First, I have to like the song. If I don't, no amount of clever editing will save it. Sometimes a really great song will carry me through average editing, but not vice versa. But a good song plus clever editing, so the vid's coherent and well-matched to the lyrics? That's the very best.

And here are some maybe controversial recs: not everyone likes RPF, so dl;dr. It's damn hard not to be delighted by Hudson and Connor, though, with their obviously close friendship and the way they cheerfully talk about loving each other at the drop of a hat.

I hate it when people read more into that and make shit up, causing drama in public spaces like social media - as Jacob said, Shane and Ilya are for the fans, Hudson and Connor are private. But creating RP fiction about them in a fanspace like AO3 doesn't bother me at all as long as no one brings it to their attention. Fanwriters have created RPF for years and although I've never been in any of the big RPF sports fandoms like hockey or baseball, I've enjoyed Joe/David RPF in Stargate Atlantis, in particular. Plus there's the whole Jared/Jensen pairing in Supernatural.

There's some incredibly good Hudcon RPF. There's also some very mediocre stuff, so here are a few of my specially selected recs. The writing is top tier in all of these, and they're all rated explicit.

Carterhaugh, Ontario by charlotte_stant. After filming, the boys go back to Connor's room to hang out, and end up fucking. Gorgeous banter, funny and nuanced, just great characterisation. Hudson's pov.

"Ya Blew It!" with Jay and Dan & Obvious - a 2-part series by falsescience (YankingAwry). This features complex relationships as the boys inveigle Jacob into a throuple – the first one's in Jacob's pov, with Hudson seducing him at the TSN SportsCentre set. Brilliant insights into actors & directing, funny, and super hot. The second part is Connor's pov - Hudson and Connor hanging out, fucking, and talking about what happened with Jacob, with Hudson setting Connor up for his own encounter. Amazing characterisation, and the Jacob aspect wasn't off-putting for me as the Hudson/Connor relationship is so resilient and lovely. (Also, have you seen JT's IMDB pic from younger years? He was hot!)

for the sake of auld lang syne by twnkwlf. This is Connor's pov, while he's staying with Hudson in Vancouver for New Years. It's mostly them hanging out lazily and talking, then fucking, and like the other recs here the characterisation is funny, subtle and feels bang on target. Excellent stuff.

that indescribable feeling by thermocline. Six encounters, real or imagined, in their developing, complex relationship. Beautifully written, balanced on an aching edge of ambiguity, and fundamentally hopeful. Alternating POVs.
